I need to do a bit more research in to this before I post an actual channel, but suffice to say there's more to this than meets the eye. Some channels have twice the power others do - which is mandated by the FCC. And some of the cheapy radios do not have all channels - which is a plus for us as we won't want to use one of the channels they have etc.
I do need to know though, who has GMRS radios as opposed to FRS radios? This was a major pain in the arse last year and most of us with GMRS had no issues at all pretty much anywhere on the Playa. The FRS radios were a pretty dismal failure accross the Playa.
Ideally we'll all have GMRS radios this year, I know a fair contingent re-invested in new GMRS compatible radios last year and we were all thankful. If you have the cash, and I know a lot of us do not, then the Combo Garmin GPS/GMRS worked really well for me last year, dust storms and white-outs just didn't matter anymore :) It is very heavy and bulky though unfortunately :(

Re: Radio channel
Thu, July 28, 2005 - 9:50 AMAng and I have GMRS. Will bought GMRS just yesterday from Fry's (Motorola brand, charger, 2 radios: ~$20) for himself and Tiff and I believe Rich is doing the same.
Unfortunately, the FRS channels are pretty much worthless becaus of all the side chatter and drugged out hippies doing chanting across the airwaves at 3am (not something *I* would ever do!! :-) ). My vote is for a GMRS channel that is not included by the FRS range. -

Thu, July 28, 2005 - 11:42 AMI believe just about everyone has GMRS or will by BM. I know that I do, as well as Josh, Packratt + Angel, and Julie. -

Re: Radio channel
Tue, August 16, 2005 - 1:13 AMOk, at long last, here's the radio channel for this year.
Channel 16, code 23: Motarola and compatible GMRS radios
Channel 16, code 24: Radio-shack GMRS radios
When set to the above, the large contingent who use Motarola or compatible radios will be able to listen and talk to the other large continent in our camp who use the Radio-Shack radios.
I'll be monitoring this channel 24 hours a day this year until we all arrive.
Some not very interesting background...
Turns out, after some research and 'checking out' of the GMRS channels at NoMan this year, there are some new GMRS repeaters on the higher channels, so I've picked a lower channel to avoid interference from those. We will atleast use this channel until everyone arrives at the event.
I've also registered on BurnDir:
